If you are researching areola restoration after a mastectomy, one of the first questions that comes up is whether insurance pays for it. The short answer is that federal law protects this benefit for most people. The longer answer, and the one that actually affects your wallet, has less to do with whether your plan covers it and more to do with your deductible.

What Federal Law Says

 

The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act, passed in 1998, requires group health plans and insurers that cover mastectomy to also cover breast reconstruction. That includes reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was performed, surgery on the other breast to produce a symmetrical appearance, prostheses, and treatment of physical complications at any stage of the mastectomy.

 

Areola and nipple restoration is considered the final stage of reconstruction. Under this law, plans that cover mastectomy are generally required to cover it as well.

 

This is why you will rarely find a plan that flatly denies areola restoration as a category. Coverage is usually there. The variable is not whether your plan covers it. The variable is how much of the cost lands on you.

Why Your Deductible Is the Real Question

 

This is the part almost nobody explains up front.

 

If your plan has a high deductible and you have not met it yet, covered does not mean free. It means the charge is applied toward the amount you are responsible for before your insurance begins paying. Depending on where you are in your plan year, that can mean you pay most or all of the billed amount out of pocket even though the service is fully covered.

 

That matters more than you might expect, because areola restoration is often billed per session, and it usually takes more than one session to reach a finished, natural result. When each session is billed separately, the total climbs quickly.

 

If you have already met your deductible for the year, your out of pocket cost may be very low. If you have not, you may be paying a significant portion yourself. Imagine You New charges one flat fee of 1,500 dollars for your areola restoration. That fee covers every session needed to complete the work properly, including your follow up appointments and refinement sessions. There is no per session billing and no surprise second invoice partway through.

 

Areola restoration is not a one appointment procedure if it is done well. Color settles and shifts as the skin heals, and reconstructed or radiated tissue behaves differently than untreated skin. Getting the depth, tone and dimension right almost always takes more than one visit. Charging per session puts pressure on both of us to rush that. A flat fee removes it.

 

You know your total cost before we begin. That is the entire point.

 

 

How Reimbursement Works

 

Imagine You New is an out of network provider. That means we do not bill your insurance company directly. Instead, you pay the flat fee and we provide you with complete itemized documentation to submit to your insurer for reimbursement under your out of network benefits.

 

Your documentation packet includes the itemized receipt, the applicable procedure codes for intradermal pigmentation used to correct color defects, your provider information, and the dates of service.

 

What comes back to you depends on your specific plan. Some plans reimburse a substantial portion of out of network care. Others reimburse less, or apply it toward your out of network deductible. We cannot promise a reimbursement amount, and any provider who does is guessing. What we can do is make sure you have everything your insurer needs to process the claim correctly the first time.

 

 

Questions to Ask Your Insurance Company

 

Call the member services number on the back of your card and ask these directly:

 

Does my plan cover nipple and areola restoration as part of breast reconstruction under the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act?

 

What is my remaining deductible for this plan year, and does it apply to this service?

 

Do I have out of network benefits, and what percentage of out of network charges does my plan reimburse?

 

Is prior authorization required before I have the procedure?

 

Where do I submit an out of network claim, and is there a deadline?

 

Write down the date, the name of the person you spoke with, and the reference number for the call. If a claim is later processed incorrectly, that record matters.

 

 

A Note on Timing

 

If you have already met your deductible this year, completing your areola restoration before your plan year resets can make a meaningful financial difference. If you are early in your plan year and have a high deductible, it is worth understanding that going in rather than discovering it afterward.
